Make conscious choices about our diet is one of the best things we can do for our health and our world. Here are some reasons to consider a vegan lifestyle.

Veganism is fast becoming a popular lifestyle. There is a simplicity and a deep truth that underlies this way of eating that many feel drawn to.

Although vegetarian is a great way to start of the path of healthy, conscious living, veganism is the next frontier. There are many grounds for embarking on a new way of eating. Here are some solid reasons to contemplate if exploring veganism.

Animal Treatment

The amount of evidence of the disgusting and inhumane treatment of animals on farms is appalling. This kind of horrible treatment, which can be viewed in a free movie, "Meet Your Meat," makes one question the nature of humans. Many animals never see sunlight, chickens can not spread their wings, mothers and children are separated, and they live in filth. They are fed a horrible, unnatural diet and given hormones that were never meant to be introduced into a body. This, of course, gets concentrated into their bodies and byproducts, and those who ingest it are receiving a plethora of hormones and diseased cells.

Cow Milk is a Foreign Substance

First of all, many milk cows are kept in horrible conditions. They are kept pregnant and milked unnaturally, which is very taxing on their bodies. They are given high amounts of hormones so that there milk production increases from it's natural amount of about 1 gallon a day, to an incredible 11 gallons!

Secondly, rationalized thinking will shed light on the simple fact that cow milk was produced for calves, not humans. It's actually ridiculous for one breed to steal and consume another species' milk, especially well into adulthood. It causes many health problems, including irritable bowl syndrome, osteoporosis, and obesity. There is an excellent video that discusses many issues related to dairy consumption.

More Sustainable

A vegan lifestyle is better for the environment. Raising livestock wastes and depletes good land, including rainforests. It requires 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. Fossil fuels are needlessly wasted in the livestock industry. Incredible amounts of fossil fuels are burned and emissions are emitted in order to produce animal products.

Logical Diet

When intuition and science are shouting the same message, that animal products are not necessary in the human diet, it seems that veganism is a logical choice. The flat, herbivore shape of human teeth, the long colon common to herbivores, the lack of claws, the non-existence of a natural desire to kill, and many other evidences are too great to be ignored. Everything our bodies require can be obtained through the plant kingdom. When humans begin eating their nature prescribed diet, health ensues.

There are hundreds of reasons why veganism is a viable way of life. The above topics were merely a starting point. Books, websites, support groups, and many other resources are readily available to foster an easy transition into this diet. Excellent words to keep in mind during this learning process are, "You are what you eat."
